Mozilla

Mozilla is building a better internet.

The open Internet is in danger.

Around the globe, the Internet’s defining characteristics — openness, freedom, potential for innovation — are under threat.

How? Monopolies are growing in influence, with a handful of tech giants acting as gatekeepers to access and information. Walled gardens are increasingly shepherding users to corners of the Web where content is tightly controlled and carefully curated. Mass surveillance by governments and profit-motivated companies is becoming routine. And ill-advised Internet legislation is emerging on every continent, endangering net neutrality.

To combat these threats, Mozilla has grown its policy and advocacy teams. In addition to advocating for strong policy positions, we also need to engage the emotions and curiosity of everyday Internet users. That’s why we want to bring in creative hackers - tinkerers and explorers who are most energized when creating web experiences that help people understand and take action on our issues.

Similar to a residency, we want to bring in a new creative perspective to create things like: - Interactive movies that respond to the user (something like this https://donottrack-doc.com ) - “Explainers” that help people understand complicated online processes (something like this http://o-c-r.org/adcells/ ) - “Explorables” that help users understand systems and broad concepts (like this http://ncase.me/neurons/) - Browser add ons that help viewers understand the web while browsing (like this https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/lightbeam/) - Fun and whimsical apps that give people a memorable experience around an issue (like this http://el.s.todo.to.it/cryptoloji/1131/#/welcome)

You will join the Advocacy Media team, working with designers, developers, marketers, filmmakers and activists.

Experience & Qualifications: - You are great at making things for the web - CSS, HTML & JavaScript - You have experience with or are comfortable learning modern web frameworks such as NodeJS, React, etc. - You are comfortable prototyping things, but also comfortable with pushing those things to production - You have a strong portfolio of previous work that is delightful, engaging and thought provoking - You have made, or understand how to make, experiences within platforms such as Facebook or the app store models. You understand the irony. - You’re comfortable with Agile-esque process & version control systems
